There is conviction, and then there is this. The Dolphins took Taylen Green a full 40 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That Slaughter pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want. The Abney II pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher and running back.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 24 they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that.
In the 30th pick they get a centerfielder for the defense at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
A straight-up fair deal on Anthony Hill Jr. at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
Christen Miller in pick No. 43 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose cornerback. Keith Abney II in Round 3, Pick 6 leaves edge rusher and running back for later.
They read the board right and Germie Bernard was the payoff at the 75th overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jake Slaughter at Round 3, Pick 23 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value with a capital V on Keylan Rutledge in pick 90, a genuine coup. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Ted Hurst at the 94th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kaleb Proctor in pick No. 130 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Taylen Green at the 151st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach on Jaren Kanak in the Round 7 slot; the board had better options right there. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A tidy bit of business in slot 238, where Thaddeus Dixon graded well above the range. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
