The war room fell hard for Carson Steele, and it showed at the 219th overall pick: 35 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas.
Mims falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 19 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They will replay Amarius Mims at the 41st overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Kris Jenkins in Round 2, Pick 19 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Braelon Allen at No. 83 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zak Zinter at pick No. 92 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A straight-up fair deal on Tykee Smith at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Mike Sainristil at par in the 135th pick, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zion Nelson in pick 217. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Carson Steele in the 219th overall pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ja'Had Carter in the Round 7 slot is fair value, right on his grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
