Start where it matters. The Commanders took Caleb Williams to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Reaching for Murphy left real value on the table behind him. The Franklin pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 2 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Ja'Tavion Sanders at the 40th pick, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the 41st overall pick with a little surplus value in Quinyon Mitchell. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They did well to land Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Round 3, Pick 3, just ahead of his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zak Zinter. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Gabriel Murphy, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A need, and now a little less of one.
Blake Fisher in No. 102 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Cedric Johnson in pick No. 141, and that is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Josh Proctor in the 181st pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Zakhari Franklin at the 223rd overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
