You could see the war room lean forward. Mason Taylor at pick No. 138 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. A near-flawless weekend of work, and a A to cap it.
If Mills pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up.
A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
In Round 1, Pick 28 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Somehow Nick Emmanwori was still sitting there in pick No. 36, and they pounced on premier safety value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A slide stopped in the 53rd pick, with Tyler Booker worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Circle this one: Jihaad Campbell at No. 67 is a fall that decides a draft. A minor itch, scratched.
A top-tier running back at a bargain, TreVeyon Henderson in slot 79, plain and simple. It fills a real need, too.
A wild overpay on Rylie Mills in the Round 4 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Taking Mason Taylor in pick 138 is close to grand larceny; a tight end that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
