Somebody took the Giants to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.
They have staked the next five years on Drake Maye, which is the only story that really matters here. The Giants indulged a want in Williams while a need in safety, wide receiver and other spots stayed open. The safety spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
They banked enough surplus on Jackson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th pick they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
In pick 23 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Junior Colson in the 58th overall pick. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
By-the-book stuff, Sedrick Van Pran at No. 70 squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Dominick Puni at Round 3, Pick 30 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Khyree Jackson at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They did well to land Josh Newton in slot 126, just ahead of his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking James Williams at linebacker with safety, wide receiver and other spots open.
Javion Cohen in Round 5, Pick 29 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Fabien Lovett at pick 183 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
