Boards are made to be trusted, and the Commanders shredded theirs for Doug Nester. He came off 46 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a bendy edge with upside at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Cooper Beebe in pick 40; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jeremiah Trotter Jr.. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Ja'Lynn Polk in slot 78 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jalen McMillan in the 100th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Jared Wiley in No. 152; a little patience would have been rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Drake Nugent at the 194th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value said wait; Doug Nester in pick No. 256 says they were not listening. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
