You can draft well and still miss the point. The Packers did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to edge rusher, which was the need that mattered most.
Zinter has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Sainristil value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. The trade work was a quiet net positive.
They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
Brian Thomas Jr. in pick 25 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Cooper Beebe in the 35th pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It fills a real need, too.
Junior Colson in pick No. 41 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor itch, scratched.
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 25, with Mike Sainristil worth more than the price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Zak Zinter at No. 91 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jarrian Jones at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Tykee Smith slid further than he should have, and slot 169 is lovely value for the safety. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
No edge and no loss on JD Bertrand in the 219th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Michael Barrett at pick 245 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jordan Whittington in the 255th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
