Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jha'Quan Jackson got past him. The Cowboys do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 216. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
The Rogers reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it.
On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Payton Wilson in pick 56 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trey Benson at pick No. 87 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached into another round for Justin Rogers, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A need, and now a little less of one.
They barely believed it either: Jha'Quan Jackson still on the board at slot 216. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Frank Gore Jr. at the Round 7 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let a linebacker like Jordan Magee reach the 244th overall pick and blink. They did not. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
