They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: George Gumbs Jr., 40 picks early at the Round 5 slot. More right than wrong, and a B- to match.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. Caldwell at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with cornerback chief among the fixes. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 18 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Lee Hunter in pick No. 45; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Treydan Stukes at No. 80 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Ted Hurst slipping to the Round 3 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy little value on Brian Parker II in pick 115, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A big swing on George Gumbs Jr. at slot 154, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Demond Claiborne at the Round 5 slot squarely in line with his ranking. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Aamil Wagner in No. 173, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Beau Stephens was the payoff at Round 5, Pick 34. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jeff Caldwell at pick No. 211 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A need, and now a little less of one.
