There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Patriots started one anyway for Jalen Travis, 152 picks ahead of schedule.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Ashton Jeanty at slot 4 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Tate Ratledge at the 38th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They reached a country mile for Jaylin Noel at No. 69, and the board is aghast. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Emery Jones Jr. this early at pick 77. The roster fit checks out.
KeAndre Lambert-Smith at Round 4, Pick 4 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A wild overpay on Jalen Travis in the 144th overall pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It fills a real need, too.
Andrew Armstrong in No. 217 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Garrett Dellinger, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jackson Woodard in the 238th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor itch, scratched.
