Somebody in the Round 4 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The 49ers sat still while Mike Washington Jr., the No. 72 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Hurst to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 6 with a little surplus value in Denzel Boston. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They let A.J. Haulcy come to them and pounced at No. 58. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Chase Bisontis at pick No. 59 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ted Hurst at slot 70 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Mike Washington Jr. in the 105th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
By-the-book stuff, Trey Zuhn III at the 127th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No edge and no loss on Oscar Delp in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nolan Rucci in pick 248 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
