The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Cowing. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The Najee Harris pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
J.J. McCarthy at the 20th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
In No. 23 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. More want than need.
Mekhi Wingo in slot 108 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster fit checks out.
A tidy little value on Johnny Wilson in pick 129, a step better than break-even. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Nehemiah Pritchett at the Round 5 slot. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Javion Cohen in the 167th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Jacob Cowing at pick No. 177 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in Round 7, Pick 10, with JD Bertrand worth more than the price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Garret Greenfield at No. 232 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
