Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Tylan Grable got past him. The Chiefs do not have to explain a thing at the 252nd overall pick. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. Johnson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd pick they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
No edge and no loss on Kiran Amegadjie in pick 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took DJ James at par in the 95th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Bucky Irving at Round 4, Pick 32 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 159 is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They jumped the gun on Cedric Johnson, taking him earlier than his grade liked. It fills a real need, too.
Tylan Grable in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
