You can draft well and still miss the point. The Dolphins did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to quarterback, which was the need that mattered most. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
The Colson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. The Ugwu pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
Fair-plus on Javon Bullard, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They let Junior Colson come to them and pounced at pick No. 90. A need, and now a little less of one.
A straight-up fair deal on Dominick Puni at pick 104, value and slot in agreement. The roster fit checks out.
No drama and no debate, Ben Sinnott went about where he belonged in No. 137. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Michael Barrett at Round 5, Pick 36 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A slide stopped in the 188th pick, with Javon Baker worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Brian Ugwu in the Round 6 slot, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaden Crumedy at the 220th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It does not line up with the team's obvious holes.
Donovan Jennings in the 242nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chad Lindberg. It fills a real need, too.
