Washington Commanders

A franchise passer in McCarthy headlines a A- weekend for the Commanders.

The search is over. The Commanders handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development.

The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The McCormick reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade. That is an edge rusher worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

A whole weekend of picks and wide receiver is somehow still a want.

Bottom line, they did the job about as well as it can be done.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.20 · Pick 20 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In slot 20 they get a long-term answer under center, reach and all.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Dallas Turner · LB-EDGE · rank 14
Dallas Turner at pick 36 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
They read the board right and Amarius Mims was the payoff at the 40th overall pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Jackson Powers-Johnson · C · rank 32
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jackson Powers-Johnson in Round 2, Pick 12. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 74
Cade Stover at the Round 3 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.13 · Pick 77 · Max Melton · CB · rank 76
No drama and no debate, Max Melton went about where he belonged in pick No. 77. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
Kingsley Suamataia at No. 78 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.35 · Pick 98 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 105
They paid sticker price for Zak Zinter in the 98th pick, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 114
A conviction pick on Cedric Gray at No. 100 that the board grades a round light. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.19 · Pick 119 · Mason McCormick · OT · rank 146
Mason McCormick in pick No. 119 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Xavier Thomas · DE-EDGE · rank 162
Xavier Thomas in Round 5, Pick 3 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Kalen King · CB · rank 139
Kalen King slid further than he should have, and pick 152 is lovely value for the cornerback. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 220
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on JD Bertrand. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
