The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Austin Stogner at No. 242 regardless, 107 picks early.
So much rides on Bo Nix that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is McGlothern.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
Marvin Harrison Jr. in the 3rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
In the 24th overall pick they get their guy under center for the next decade at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Dallin Holker at pick 104 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They let Javon Foster come to them and pounced at No. 136. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Grayson Murphy in Round 5, Pick 24 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A quiet steal in the Round 5 slot: Luke McCaffrey for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Jha'Quan Jackson in slot 182 lands just on the right side of the ledger. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They barely believed it either: Dwight McGlothern still on the board at pick 229. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had Tyler Owens higher than the 240th overall pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A real head-scratcher, Austin Stogner in Round 7, Pick 22 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
