The Dolphins went off the board in a big way for Emani Bailey, 102 picks early. Conviction is one thing; this is another.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Robinson. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 21 they get a security blanket over the middle, and a steal at that.
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get an island corner at fair value. More want than need.
A top-tier edge rusher at a bargain, Chop Robinson in the Round 2 slot, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Cooper Beebe in pick No. 49 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A premium they did not need to pay, Sedrick Van Pran a notch or two before his time. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Christian Jones in the 115th pick is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Luke McCaffrey at the Round 4 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They went early on Jared Wiley in No. 149, and the value did not follow. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Value said wait; Emani Bailey in pick No. 158 says they were not listening. The roster fit checks out.
They paid a round early for Trente Jones in the 184th pick, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Evan Williams at the 198th overall pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They took Jaylan Ford at par in Round 6, Pick 27, which is nothing to complain about. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at slot 214 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Garret Greenfield at pick 224 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy little value on Edefuan Ulofoshio in pick No. 241, a step better than break-even. It fills a real need, too.
Zion Logue at the 245th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
