You build a draft on nights like this. Edefuan Ulofoshio had no business being available in pick No. 246, and the Dolphins did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Boyd reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
In pick 32 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Jonah Elliss in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Cole Bishop in the 91st overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Nothing to complain about; Kris Abrams-Draine went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A minor itch, scratched.
Jalen McMillan at pick No. 104 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Gabriel Murphy. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Erick All at slot 120 is a conviction pick that outran the value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid a round early for Xavier Thomas in pick 135, more than the board wanted. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wide receiver of that caliber at pick No. 171 is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach on Khristian Boyd in the 172nd pick; the board had better options right there. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Josh Newton in No. 186 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
By-the-book stuff, Tyrice Knight at Round 6, Pick 36 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
A tidy little value on Jalen Coker in slot 216, a step better than break-even. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board had Layden Robinson higher than the Round 6 slot, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They took Trey Taylor at par in the 232nd overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Edefuan Ulofoshio at the Round 7 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The roster fit checks out.
