The war room fell hard for Mitchell Evans, and it showed at pick No. 232: 45 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. Put together, it is a D.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through wide receiver. They banked enough surplus on Allar to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and wide receiver is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Will Campbell. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
In the 25th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Jalon Walker at Round 2, Pick 13 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Drew Allar at pick No. 98 for years; that is how good the value is. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Maxwell Hairston at slot 99 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They read the board right and Smael Mondon Jr. was the payoff at No. 100. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Parker Brailsford at Round 4, Pick 13 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaishawn Barham in the 151st pick is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They did well to land Lathan Ransom in the 152nd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They talked themselves into Mason Taylor at pick No. 201, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They went early on Anthony Belton in slot 227, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A real head-scratcher, Mitchell Evans in No. 232 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A premium they did not need to pay, Will Howard a notch or two before his time. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
