The rest of the league had time to spare on J.J. Weaver; the Dolphins did not wait, grabbing him 61 spots ahead at pick 250. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. So much rides on Jalen Milroe that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They banked enough surplus on Paige to cover a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 10 they get an anchor for the offensive line. A real need, handled.
In slot 22 they get their quarterback of the future, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They let Carson Beck come to them and pounced at the 42nd overall pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A wild overpay on Kenneth Grant in Round 2, Pick 18, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A big swing on Tyleik Williams at No. 53, well ahead of any board in the building. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Donovan Jackson in the Round 3 slot. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Smael Mondon Jr.. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board had Nick Emmanwori higher than Round 3, Pick 34, and the safety fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Abdul Carter at No. 99 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaishawn Barham this early at pick No. 111. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Fair-plus on Tyler Warren, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Gunnar Helm in slot 123 is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Quincy Riley in the 148th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Jared Wilson. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Makari Paige at pick No. 224 for years; that is how good the value is. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
A reach for Jimmy Horn Jr. in the Round 7 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid a round early for Jasheen Davis in slot 231, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They did well to land Giles Jackson in No. 249, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into J.J. Weaver at Round 7, Pick 36, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
