There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Dolphins started one anyway for Matthew Jones, 52 picks ahead of schedule.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. So much rides on Jayden Daniels that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him.
That Williams pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
The verdict is harsh because the weekend was, and there is little to argue.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
In pick No. 21 they get a passer to set the clock by at a price that makes it sweeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
In slot 22 they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. A clean fit for the roster.
Byron Murphy II is a better player than the 35th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A reasonable price with a little left over, D.J. James in pick 69. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Nothing to complain about; Ruke Orhorhoro went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Circle this one: Xavier Worthy at pick No. 74 is a fall that decides a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the 75th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They will replay Payton Wilson at No. 90 for years; that is how good the value is. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Javon Bullard at pick 91 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
Junior Colson in the Round 4 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cade Stover at the 105th pick is money in the bank, a TE-EDGE taken below his worth. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ben Sinnott well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Audric Estime in Round 4, Pick 12. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Matthew Jones at pick 190 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
They barely believed it either: Isaiah Williams still on the board at the 247th overall pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They reached a country mile for Mason Fairchild at the Round 7 slot, and the board is aghast. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Thomas went about where he belonged in No. 249. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
