The trade table was a mismatch, and the Dolphins were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. No fireworks, but a solid B+.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Phillips. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Quinyon Mitchell in pick No. 33; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Good price on Graham Barton in pick 53, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Christian Haynes at No. 91 is money in the bank, a offensive lineman taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid sticker price for Jacob Cowing in slot 101, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Jaheim Bell went about where he belonged in the Round 5 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Braelon Allen at the 158th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the running back. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nice patience on Edefuan Ulofoshio, who had no business lasting to pick No. 164. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Zion Tupuola-Fetui. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Javon Baker in Round 6, Pick 11 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Andru Phillips at No. 199 for years; that is how good the value is. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Magee at slot 203 squarely in line with his ranking. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They let Jared Wiley come to them and pounced at the 219th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taulia Tagovailoa at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
