The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Dolphins watched Julian Pearl slide 26 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
With quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on cornerback is the choice that costs them. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Kool-Aid McKinstry slipping to the 33rd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They took Kingsley Suamataia at par in Round 2, Pick 23, which is nothing to complain about. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Bralen Trice in slot 65; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Khyree Jackson, a cornerback that was not the priority.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cedric Gray. The roster fit checks out.
Dallin Holker at No. 157 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Sione Vaki is a better player than the 186th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Cornelius Johnson slid further than he should have, and the Round 6 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Julian Pearl at slot 239 is a fall that decides a draft. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
