There is reaching, and then there is Taulia Tagovailoa at pick 241. The Dolphins jumped the board by 47 and dared it to prove them wrong. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. Quantity was the play, for better or worse.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 28 they get a mismatch in the passing game, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
No drama and no debate, Xavier Worthy went about where he belonged in No. 55. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A straight-up fair deal on Braden Fiske at the Round 2 slot, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A premium they did not need to pay, Brenden Rice a notch or two before his time. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on James Williams in Round 4, Pick 21; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They paid a round early for Trevor Keegan in pick 136, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They talked themselves into Julian Pearl at No. 184, and the board did not agree. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taulia Tagovailoa in the 241st pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
