The Dolphins did not so much draft Akheem Mesidor as overpay for him, 73 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
They banked enough surplus on Smith to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. They will answer for taking safety early while quarterback went begging.
Bottom line, with Wyatt Milum leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 22 they get a building block for the line, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
A slide stopped in pick 51, with Jihaad Campbell worth more than the price. It fills a real need, too.
Nice patience on Xavier Watts, who had no business lasting to pick No. 57. A minor itch, scratched.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback to take Andrew Mukuba, a safety that was not the priority.
Jake Majors in the 112th pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
DeMonte Capehart in No. 114 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Somehow Mason Taylor was still sitting there in slot 133, and they pounced on premier tight end value. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Brashard Smith in No. 149 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Taking Chris Paul Jr. in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Sonny Styles at Round 5, Pick 26 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Elijah Arroyo in the 224th pick, plain and simple. A need, and now a little less of one.
Theo Wease Jr. at the 231st overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Akheem Mesidor in pick 252 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
