Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Ollie Gordon II got past him. The Dolphins do not have to explain a thing at Round 7, Pick 15. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C.
The Mertz pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
So much rides on Malaki Starks that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 19 they get a downhill hitter at safety. More want than need.
Value said wait; Donovan Jackson in pick No. 48 says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
Tommi Hill at the 98th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
No edge and no loss on Smael Mondon Jr. in slot 99; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on Tez Johnson in pick 110, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Howard Cross III. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Sebastian Castro in Round 5, Pick 8 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Steal is underselling it; Mason Taylor at the 149th overall pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A linebacker of that caliber at Round 5, Pick 19 is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
Nice patience on Seth McLaughlin, who had no business lasting to pick 224. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Ollie Gordon II was still sitting there in the 231st pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Graham Mertz in the Round 7 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
