When a board-topper like Trevor Keegan slides to pick 222, you do not overthink it, and the Commanders did not.
Whatever Drake Maye becomes, the front office has tied its fortunes to the answer. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Drake Maye and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A clean fit for the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Dallas Turner at pick No. 36 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It fills a real need, too.
Graham Barton in slot 40 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at the Round 2 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
DJ James slid further than he should have, and the 68th pick is lovely value for the cornerback. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Austin Booker in the 100th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
The board fumbled Malik Washington all the way to Round 5, Pick 3, and they scooped it up. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Circle this one: James Williams at pick 152 is a fall that decides a draft. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Trevor Keegan in No. 222 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
