Los Angeles Chargers

The Chargers let Johnson fall into their laps, and walked away with a D+.

The trade table was where it all came apart. The Chargers shipped out far more than they hauled back, and no amount of spin dresses up the bill. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D+ is the result.

They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They banked enough surplus on Johnson to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every board in the league had Lovett lower, and that gap is the story.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Brock Bowers · TE · rank 6
In pick No. 6 they get a red-zone target to build around. A real need, handled.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 43
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Payton Wilson. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · T.J. Tampa · CB · rank 49
No drama and no debate, T.J. Tampa went about where he belonged in slot 47. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 56
Xavier Worthy slid further than he should have, and the 69th overall pick is lovely value for the wide receiver. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.23 · Pick 86 · Jaylen Wright · RB · rank 79
Fair-plus on Jaylen Wright, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · DJ James · CB · rank 87
Somehow DJ James was still sitting there in the 106th pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.36 · Pick 136 · Fabien Lovett · DL · rank 145
They paid up for Fabien Lovett at pick No. 136 when waiting would have done the job. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 146
A straight-up fair deal on Roger Rosengarten at pick 139, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Caedan Wallace · OT · rank 180
Caedan Wallace at slot 183 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Cornelius Johnson · WR · rank 187
Cornelius Johnson at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.16 · Pick 236 · Keaton Bills · OG · rank 233
Keaton Bills in the 236th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.36 · Pick 256 · Josh Wallace · CB · rank 253
A reasonable price with a little left over, Josh Wallace in No. 256. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
