Las Vegas Raiders

Mendoza is the plan now, and the Raiders grade out a A-.

The search is over. The Raiders handed the keys to Fernando Mendoza, and the whole operation now runs on his development.

That Muhammad pick is the receipt they will wave around later. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. It is not that Wheatley is a bad player; it is that the Raiders had louder needs to answer first.

Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, Fernando Mendoza and all.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Fernando Mendoza · QB · rank 4
In No. 2 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Denzel Boston · WR · rank 31
Denzel Boston in pick No. 36 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.16 · Pick 48 · Chris Johnson · CB · rank 33
A quiet steal in the 48th overall pick: Chris Johnson for less than the market said. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Jacob Rodriguez · LB · rank 52
Jacob Rodriguez at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Domonique Orange · DT · rank 73
Domonique Orange at Round 3, Pick 14 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the interior defensive lineman. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Daylen Everette · CB · rank 83
They barely believed it either: Daylen Everette still on the board at slot 102. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.13 · Pick 113 · Bud Clark · S · rank 105
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bud Clark in the 113th pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Zakee Wheatley · S · rank 90
A surprising call. With edge rusher still to address, they spent pick 117 on Zakee Wheatley, a safety they were not short of.
R4.22 · Pick 122 · Emmett Johnson · RB · rank 108
They read the board right and Emmett Johnson was the payoff at the 122nd overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · Malik Muhammad · CB · rank 103
They will replay Malik Muhammad at No. 134 for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R5.35 · Pick 175 · Travis Burke · OT · rank 172
A tidy little value on Travis Burke in the Round 5 slot, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.4 · Pick 185 · Zane Durant · DT · rank 184
By-the-book stuff, Zane Durant at the 185th pick squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
R6.27 · Pick 208 · Kaelon Black · RB · rank 219
A premium they did not need to pay, Kaelon Black a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R7.3 · Pick 219 · Riley Nowakowski · TE · rank 218
Riley Nowakowski in pick No. 219 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
