The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The cost of the Samac reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. However the rest shakes out, Morgan at that price is a win they earned.
Hit on Drake Maye and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get a long-term answer under center. A real need, handled.
A quiet steal in the 34th pick: Brian Thomas Jr. for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jordan Morgan at Round 2, Pick 15 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Ja'Lynn Polk at slot 68 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Roger Rosengarten in the Round 4 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on Zak Zinter at No. 109, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
No drama and no debate, Jarrian Jones went about where he belonged in pick No. 122. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No edge and no loss on Christian Jones in the 137th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 149th overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid sticker price for Dominique Hampton in slot 180, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Ryan Flournoy at par in No. 193, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Layden Robinson at pick No. 194 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value said wait; Nick Samac in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Tylan Grable at the 231st pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. The roster fit checks out.
They paid up for Sam Hartman at pick 237 when waiting would have done the job. It fills a real need, too.
