The needs board said one thing and the Texans did another, using the 127th pick on Kris Abrams-Draine while running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots waited. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. Getting Restrepo where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They will need Powell-Ryland to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 27 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
Xavier Worthy is a better player than No. 53 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They paid sticker price for Sedrick Van Pran in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A slide stopped in pick 121, with Tommy Eichenberg worth more than the price. The roster fit checks out.
A curious use of the 127th pick. Running back, interior defensive lineman and other spots needed the pick; a cornerback in Kris Abrams-Draine did not.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jaylan Ford at slot 158. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reach for Antwaun Powell-Ryland in pick No. 239; a little patience would have been rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They robbed the room for Xavier Restrepo here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
