They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Jayden Daniels is the Patriots' quarterback, full stop. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Ceaser.
That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. They will answer for taking S-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman went begging.
They will need Powers-Johnson to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
A reach on Jackson Powers-Johnson in No. 34; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tyler Guyton. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Value with a capital V on Xavier Legette in Round 2, Pick 15, a genuine coup. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They liked Christian Mahogany enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 68. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
No drama and no debate, DJ James went about where he belonged in the 107th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jalyx Hunt adds a S-EDGE and leaves interior defensive lineman untouched.
Dallin Holker in slot 135 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Nelson Ceaser all the way to No. 139, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A slide stopped in pick No. 182, with Frank Gore Jr. worth more than the price. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nathan Thomas is a better player than slot 185 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They let Kenny Logan Jr. come to them and pounced at the 224th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in Round 7, Pick 12: Brevyn Spann-Ford for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
