It is a puzzling start. The Texans had running back, wide receiver and other spots to solve and reached instead for Kris Abrams-Draine, a cornerback, at Round 4, Pick 21. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
A whole weekend of picks and running back is somehow still a want. However the rest shakes out, Braswell at that price is a win they earned.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The back end got a real overhaul.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 27th overall pick they get a potential shutdown corner, outstanding value to boot. Need was not the driver here.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 2 slot, where Chris Braswell graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Christian Mahogany in slot 88 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A surprising call. With running back, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent the 121st pick on Kris Abrams-Draine, a cornerback they were not short of.
James Williams in Round 4, Pick 27 is fair value, right on his grade. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A tidy little value on Joe Milton III in the 158th overall pick, a step better than break-even. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nathaniel Watson slid further than he should have, and No. 239 is lovely value for the linebacker. It fills a real need, too.
Jason Henderson is a better player than pick No. 242 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
