The Chargers lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. They will need McCaffrey to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The Chargers clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, interior defensive lineman very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 8 they get a moveable chess piece at tight end at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They paid sticker price for Kris Jenkins in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Kingsley Suamataia in pick No. 52 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Junior Colson at Round 3, Pick 2 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
The board had cheaper options than Mike Sainristil at the 71st pick, and it noticed. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malik Washington in No. 106 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Luke McCaffrey, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Braelon Allen in pick 139 is miles ahead of his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Cedric Johnson in No. 176. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Michael Barrett at pick No. 187 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
