The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Patriots spent their marquee pick on Drake Maye, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. Hopper falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 3 they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Adonai Mitchell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kingsley Suamataia at No. 68 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 104 with a little surplus value in Cam Hart. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No edge and no loss on Anthony Gould in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board had Malik Mustapha higher than the 180th overall pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They read the board right and Ty'Ron Hopper was the payoff at slot 193. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They did well to land Frank Gore Jr. in the 231st pick, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
