You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Tykee Smith in slot 95. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
With cornerback, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Jenkins.
They left with edge rusher solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 32nd overall pick they get a two-high chess piece. Need was not the driver here.
They took Payton Wilson at par in pick 41, which is nothing to complain about. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Kris Jenkins slid further than he should have, and pick No. 58 is lovely value for the edge rusher. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid a round early for Christian Mahogany in No. 88, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 3 slot with a little surplus value in Blake Corum. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A surprising call. With cornerback, wide receiver and other spots still to address, they spent slot 95 on Tykee Smith, a safety they were not short of.
Good price on Javon Foster in No. 127, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Malik Mustapha at the 158th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They talked themselves into Joe Milton III at slot 168, and the board did not agree. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
