The trade table was a mismatch, and the Commanders were on the right end of it, hauling in a fortune in surplus value. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
They banked enough surplus on Mims to cover a lot of smaller sins. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, with JC Latham leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 14 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Amarius Mims at the 36th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in Round 2, Pick 5 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A slide stopped in pick 68, with Kris Jenkins worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Caelen Carson at No. 78 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Will Shipley at par in the 100th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Cade Stover in the Round 5 slot lands just on the right side of the ledger. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jamari Thrash slipping to pick No. 182 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Fair-plus on Marques Cox, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
