The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They banked enough surplus on Turner to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 7th pick they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
Graham Barton in the 36th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let an edge rusher like Dallas Turner reach pick 38 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Ladd McConkey in slot 40 is fair value, right on his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in No. 67 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They paid sticker price for Will Shipley in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Christian Mahogany is a better player than pick No. 102 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Khyree Jackson in Round 4, Pick 6 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Theo Johnson in slot 141; it is a wash and a sensible one. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Christian Jones at pick No. 181 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They took Fentrell Cypress II at par in Round 7, Pick 3, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
