Washington Commanders

A franchise passer in Daniels headlines a A weekend for the Commanders.

They finally answered the question that shadows every other one. Jayden Daniels is the Commanders' quarterback, full stop.

They banked enough surplus on Melton to cover a lot of smaller sins. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own.

The Mondon Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

A strong weekend's work, and a rare one to find this little fault with.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In Round 1, Pick 7 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
R1.14 · Pick 14 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 11
A tidy little value on Olumuyiwa Fashanu in No. 14, a step better than break-even. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Taliese Fuaga · OT · rank 26
They let Taliese Fuaga come to them and pounced at the 36th overall pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Terrion Arnold · CB · rank 30
Terrion Arnold at the 37th pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the cornerback. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.14 · Pick 78 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 89
Christian Haynes at the Round 3 slot is a conviction pick that outran the value. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Will Shipley · RB · rank 100
Will Shipley in slot 100 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 130
Smael Mondon Jr. in pick No. 107 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 136
A wild overpay on Cade Stover in pick 114, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 113
You do not let a wide receiver like Brenden Rice reach pick No. 141 and blink. They did not. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.15 · Pick 151 · Max Melton · CB · rank 118
Circle this one: Max Melton at the 151st pick is a fall that decides a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.5 · Pick 225 · Curtis Jacobs · LB · rank 204
Curtis Jacobs at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
