You build a draft on nights like this. Tre Harris had no business being available in the 225th overall pick, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Trotter Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Joe Alt in slot 4, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Nate Wiggins. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They jumped the gun on Jeremiah Trotter Jr., taking him earlier than his grade liked. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Brandon Dorlus slid further than he should have, and No. 68 is lovely value for the edge rusher. It fills a real need, too.
Zak Zinter at Round 3, Pick 37 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Will Shipley in the 104th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jaheim Bell in pick 141 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Zy Alexander at the 182nd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They will replay Tre Harris at No. 225 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
