There is a lot to like until you notice quarterback is still a hole. The Commanders never got to the one that mattered most.
Jackson falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They will need Castles to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 9 they get a cornerstone up front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nate Wiggins in Round 2, Pick 4 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Troy Fautanu went about where he belonged in the 37th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They let Brandon Dorlus come to them and pounced at No. 68. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Zak Zinter at pick 100 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
By-the-book stuff, Tommy Eichenberg at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Nice patience on Khyree Jackson, who had no business lasting to the 141st pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on McCallan Castles in slot 146, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Jamari Thrash was the payoff at Round 6, Pick 7. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Darius Muasau slipping to slot 225 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
