You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Commanders did exactly that with Grant Gunnell in the 36th pick.
The Thrash pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
So much rides on Brock Bowers that the real verdict is a season or two away.
Pick-by-Pick
Brock Bowers at Round 1, Pick 7 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Grant Gunnell at No. 36 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The roster fit checks out.
Graham Mertz at slot 39 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Chris Braswell at the 71st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
They paid sticker price for Graham Barton in pick No. 100, and that is fine. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They reached a country mile for Ben Sinnott at the 107th pick, and the board is aghast. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Gabe Hall in No. 144, miles early. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
The board fumbled Jamari Thrash all the way to pick No. 185, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dylan McMahon well ahead of where he belonged. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
