You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Chiefs did exactly that with Jayden Higgins in pick No. 66.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
There is no soft landing here: they fought the board and left quarterback open, and the grade is the bill.
Pick-by-Pick
Wyatt Milum in slot 9 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
In the 32nd pick they get a double-digit-sack hope. A real need, handled.
A tidy bit of business in pick No. 64, where Dylan Fairchild graded well above the range. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jayden Higgins at pick 66 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Ozzy Trapilo in the Round 3 slot, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Cobee Bryant at the 133rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Dont'e Thornton Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A conviction pick on Oronde Gadsden II at Round 7, Pick 40 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
