The Chiefs spent real capital to be 63 picks early on Damien Martinez, and the board is going to hold them to it. About as rough as the board gets, and a F to prove it.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers.
The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
Bottom line, it will take a lot of luck to make this look better later.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a building block for the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Dylan Fairchild in Round 2, Pick 23 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Tyleik Williams at the 59th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No edge and no loss on Aireontae Ersery in slot 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tommi Hill at pick 70 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor itch, scratched.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Theo Wease Jr.. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Josaiah Stewart at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jack Bech at the 131st overall pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A wild overpay on Jonah Monheim in No. 132, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Gunnar Helm at pick 137 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaishawn Barham at slot 139 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Jared Ivey in Round 5, Pick 26, miles early. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Damien Martinez well ahead of where he belonged. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Bru McCoy in the 205th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
