Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the 49ers were there to profit. Dontay Corleone, the No. 67 name on the board, should have been long gone before No. 104. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The linebacker hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Spending an early pick on cornerback with linebacker open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The Stephens pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
Emmanuel Pregnon in pick No. 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Derrick Moore at par in the 58th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Jake Slaughter in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Circle this one: Zachariah Branch at pick 95 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kamari Ramsey at the 96th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Taking Dontay Corleone in slot 104 is close to grand larceny; an interior defensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Malik Muhammad in Round 4, Pick 6 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A curious use of No. 127. Linebacker needed the pick; a cornerback in Will Lee III did not.
A surprising call. With linebacker still to address, they spent No. 130 on Jakobe Thomas, a safety they were not short of.
Kaytron Allen at slot 133 is a conviction pick that outran the value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaiah World. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Beau Stephens in pick 139 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid up for Drew Allar at the Round 5 slot when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nice patience on Eli Raridon, who had no business lasting to the 148th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A straight-up fair deal on J'Mari Taylor at pick No. 188, value and slot in agreement. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
