Washington Commanders

Jones should have been long gone. The Commanders pounced, and earned a B-.

The Commanders spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Emery Jones, the No. 33 name on the board, in the 67th pick. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.

The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up.

Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered. Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.7 · Pick 7 · Will Campbell · OT · rank 6
In the 7th pick they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Emeka Egbuka · WR · rank 15
The board fumbled Emeka Egbuka all the way to pick No. 34, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.2 · Pick 66 · TreVeyon Henderson · RB · rank 50
TreVeyon Henderson is a better player than slot 66 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Emery Jones · OT · rank 33
A offensive lineman of that caliber at pick 67 is the definition of value, full stop. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.2 · Pick 98 · Rylie Mills · DL · rank 96
No drama and no debate, Rylie Mills went about where he belonged in the 98th overall pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.7 · Pick 103 · Nazir Stackhouse · DL · rank 97
Nazir Stackhouse at Round 4, Pick 7 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.2 · Pick 130 · Noah Thomas · WR · rank 99
Circle this one: Noah Thomas at the Round 5 slot is a fall that decides a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.2 · Pick 162 · Malik Spencer · CB · rank 130
Steal is underselling it; Malik Spencer at No. 162 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.7 · Pick 167 · Aubrey Burks · S · rank 154
They let Aubrey Burks come to them and pounced at pick 167. A minor itch, scratched.
R6.23 · Pick 183 · Ben Bywater · LB · rank 183
Ben Bywater in the 183rd overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
