Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jonah Savaiinaea got past him. The Commanders do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 98. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 4 they get protection for the quarterback at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Travis Hunter at the 34th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Good price on Emery Jones in Round 2, Pick 4, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They robbed the room for Omarion Hampton here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
Mykel Williams in pick No. 68 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jonah Savaiinaea at pick 98 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Noah Thomas all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Billy Bowman Jr. at slot 162 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Noah Daniels at the Round 6 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
