Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Tre Harris, the No. 26 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 238th pick.
Horn Jr. has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
They reloaded the coverage unit in bulk.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th overall pick they get a press-man option on the boundary. More want than need.
They will replay Wyatt Milum at the 38th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jalen Royals in pick 69 lands just on the right side of the ledger. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Ashton Jeanty still on the board at Round 3, Pick 13. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jihaad Campbell at slot 104 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Fairchild at No. 143 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Lander Barton in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Jimmy Horn Jr. at pick No. 220 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Somehow Tre Harris was still sitting there in Round 7, Pick 22, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
