The Patriots did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Cam Skattebo fell into the Round 6 slot.
If Jones Jr. pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a workhorse for the backfield at a price that makes it sweeter. A clean fit for the roster.
No edge and no loss on Tyler Warren in slot 38; it is a wash and a sensible one. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They paid up for Aireontae Ersery at pick 45 when waiting would have done the job. The roster fit checks out.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Alfred Collins in No. 69. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 77th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A minor itch, scratched.
A wild overpay on Emery Jones Jr. in the 104th pick, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Sonny Styles in Round 5, Pick 6 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cam Skattebo at pick No. 213 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Steal is underselling it; Jonah Monheim at Round 7, Pick 16 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jimmy Horn Jr. at No. 238 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
