The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a weapon on the perimeter. The biggest hole, addressed.
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Jordan Morgan at the 34th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Payton Wilson is a better player than the 68th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Andru Phillips at No. 114. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Elijah Jones at pick No. 137 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
The board fumbled Jacob Cowing all the way to slot 180, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tip Reiman in the Round 6 slot. It fills a real need, too.
Good price on Frank Gore Jr. in pick No. 231, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
